This course explores the role of the paralegal in trial preparation. Students will learn about all stages of litigation and how they can assist in the preparation for trial from the discovery stage to verdict. They will also learn about alternative dispute resolution.
This course explores how to conduct thorough legal research. Students will learn about the origins of the law–the common law system; the structure of the courts; the forms of publication of the law; citation form; how to use the case digest system to find the law; primary and secondary sources; mandatory and persuasive authority. Students will also learn case analysis. Among other things, students will be able to find relevant cases and statutes and draft a written analysis of a court opinion at the end of this course.
Introduction to Paralegal Studies
This course is an overview of the legal system and the role of the Paralegal within that system. It includes the study of sources of the law; legal terminology; the operation of the court systems at the state and federal levels; respective roles of attorney, client and paralegal; legal ethics . and the Code of Professional Responsibility; interviewing techniques for the paralegal and an overview of the specialized areas of law.
