My Courses
AD1100, LEC D 106 Graphic Principles I
This basic design and color theory course explores graphic communication through the understanding of the elements and principles of design, as well as the design process, including idea development through final execution. Students develop basic skills in two-dimensional design, color and content creation while employing the design process of research, sketching and experimentation. Communication designers use the concepts explored in this course in disciplines such as advertising, graphic design, web design, illustration, broadcast design, photography, and game design.
My Projects
Quanteaisha Small Design & Color Prof. Stella N When I started this course in August I expected to learn about doing designs on computers dealing with logos and creating designs. What I received was totally different. I learned the impact of 1/32 and 1/16 of a shape in design. I did not know those measurements existed until I took this course. I have realized this course is training my senses in a major way. I am starting to notice ads on the streets I have never noticed because I did not pay attention. My eyes are getting the biggest effect out of all the senses. I look at ads with a whole new perspective now. I looked at ads and clothes as a consumer but now I look at them as a designer. I try to find the pros and cons of every ad I see. Ads that used to catch my attention and stand out now look cluttered and messy. I have realized ads that used to stand out were not for the mass consumers. I was caught up in the lights and gossip narrative. Now when an object is uneven it quickly throws me off and I do not take my eyes off of it until I find all of its flaws. It makes me wonder what I would do to change the design and make it better. This course is helping me become a more confident presenter. The critiques we do in class helps me speak in front of a group and to receive constructive criticism. Talking in front of a group of people was not something I was used but I had to do it two times a week. This is good for me because it helps me with my major (advertisement design). I have also learned I need to work in silence to get my best work done. The environment has an effect on an artistās piece. I was used to working with music n my ears. When one is designing he/she must think about the consumerās path of vision. What I mean by that is we read from left to right in the western world. If I were to do a design from right to left the consumerās eyes would be uncomfortable and they would turn their head away. The design would not be successful. If I design from left to right the design would work much better because it is the natural path of vision. Being in the path of vision does not mean a design works. For example, when designing clothes or ads for fashion the designer must first look for what is in high demand for the mass consumer. The designer finds this out from retail credit card purchases. The designer goes by the popular designs and the color people purchased. Once that is known he/she would find ways to change it. In some cases the designer would change the fabric and sell it for a lower price. That makes it better for people with less money to have popular looking clothes. They have an imitation of the high price item. Now when I walk around I feel like I know the secrets to fashion and designs. This course has changed my outlook on designing and I look forward to learning more about designs.
