Internship in Communication Design
Assignment to field work/study situations of approximately eighteen plus hours per week at a graphic arts-related internship site approved by the department internship director. Sites may be in areas such as advertising, printing, corporate communications or publishing. Students keep a log/journal to be shared in group seminars/discussions. Supervision is by faculty and by the job supervisor.
Students will be required to keep a learning journal of their internship in the form of a blog using Open Lab.

Development of each studentās strategy for entering the design profession. Cumulative work will be critiqued by faculty and professional advisers. Students edit and re ne their portfolios to meet professional standards and will add materials as needed. The development of individual promotional pieces, resume writing, job search and interviewing skills will be emphasized.

Print Production for Designers focuses on current print production procedures that can ready designers for real world policies, procedures and accountability. Understanding printing processes is an essential part of designing that can assure a predictable outcome. Emphasis is on the importance of personal communication skills to better advance ideas. Topics include print media specifications, digital prepress, Pre-flight, page imposition, proofing, and preparation of color files. Strategic use of Internet search engines, websites, and leveraging tools of technology will be demonstrated to support student efforts.

This is a course in visual literacy and the design process: How we see, how we analyze the effects of our vision, and how we craft a design that will have energy and content.
All projects will include thumbnail sketches, discussion and research. A weekly scrapbook will be kept. Media used are paint, paper, ink, pencil, ruler, knife, glue, and digital software for expressing graphic ideas. Numerous critiques will take place throughout the course and studentsā active engagement in group discussion will play a vital role in establishing an atmosphere of collaboration and shared learning.
