HIST 1103 Boyle IN PER­SON FALL 2023

This course is a chrono­log­i­cal and the­matic in­tro­duc­tion to the his­tory of West­ern in­ter­ac­tions with the wider world from the late 1800s to the pre­sent, em­pha­siz­ing the fol­low­ing events: the rise of na­tion­al­ism in Eu­rope and the race for em­pire in the late 19th cen­tury, the First World War, the in­ter­war years, the Sec­ond World War, the Cold War, the post-Cold War world and the ef­fects of glob­al­iza­tion. It ex­plores how the United State en­gaged with the So­viet Union via proxy wars and spheres of in­flu­ence via third par­ties in Eu­rope, Asia, Africa, Latin Amer­ica and the Mid­dle East. It shows stu­dents the cul­tural, so­cial and po­lit­i­cal back­ground and im­pli­ca­tions of this im­por­tant pe­riod in his­tory.

Eng­lish 1101 is a writ­ing- in­ten­sive course de­signed to strengthen your com­po­si­tion skills. Writ­ing a va­ri­ety of es­says, in ad­di­tion to a re­search paper, will help you de­velop skills such as build­ing an ar­gu­ment, adopt­ing your writ­ing for dif­fer­ent needs and sit­u­a­tions, in­ter­pret­ing and re­spond­ing to a text, in­cor­po­rat­ing sec­ondary source ma­te­r­ial ef­fec­tively, and mas­ter­ing the me­chan­ics of quot­ing, cit­ing, and doc­u­ment­ing sources. The poems, short sto­ries, es­says, and news­pa­per ar­ti­cles we will read to­gether are fo­cused on New York City and urban is­sues. We will be read­ing pieces both for their in­her­ent lit­er­ary value and also as mod­els of com­po­si­tion that you may em­ploy in your writ­ing as­sign­ments. Re­flect­ing on your own ex­pe­ri­ences along­side these texts will en­sure ac­tive dis­cus­sion re­gard­ing com­mu­ni­ties, pub­lic space, urban art forms, ed­u­ca­tion, class, race, gen­der, crime, gen­tri­fi­ca­tion, and other top­ics of de­bate.

This is a course in ef­fec­tive essay writ­ing and basic re­search tech­niques, in­clud­ing use of the li­brary. De­mand­ing read­ings are as­signed for class­room dis­cus­sion and as a basis for essay writ­ing. Pre­req­ui­sites: CUNY cer­ti­fi­ca­tion in read­ing and writ­ing. Taken to­gether, the courses (EN­G1101 and EN­G1121) in the First-Year Writ­ing Pro­gram at the New York City Col­lege of Tech­nol­ogy seek to de­velop stu­dent com­pe­ten­cies in five gen­eral cat­e­gories: rhetor­i­cal knowl­edge; writ­ing and read­ing processes; crit­i­cal think­ing, read­ing, writ­ing, and re­search; com­pos­ing in man­ual and dig­i­tal en­vi­ron­ments; and knowl­edge of aca­d­e­mic con­ven­tions. In­di­vid­ual fac­ulty in­cor­po­rate these com­pe­ten­cies into their courses in dif­fer­ent ways, but all fac­ulty are able to demon­strate how their courses at­tend to these mat­ters. 4 hours, 3 cred­its
