Span­ish for Her­itage Speak­ers is an in­ter­me­di­ate course in­tended for stu­dents who were im­mersed in or ex­posed to the lan­guage while grow­ing up, but who have re­ceived lit­tle or no for­mal in­struc­tion in Span­ish. Strength­ens stu­dents’ com­pe­tence in the oral and writ­ten stan­dard va­ri­eties of Span­ish by build­ing on their pre­vi­ous knowl­edge to ex­pand their vo­cab­u­lary, strengthen their com­mand of gram­mar, and achieve more con­fi­dence and flu­ency in speak­ing and writ­ing while learn­ing about the di­ver­sity of the His­panic cul­tures. The skills ac­quired in this course will help re­in­force stu­dents’ bilin­gual abil­i­ties and cul­tural com­pe­tence.

Spanish for Heritage Speakers is an intermediate course intended for students who were immersed in or exposed to the language while growing up, but who have received little or no formal instruction in Spanish. Strengthens students’ competence in the oral and written standard varieties of Spanish by building on their previous knowledge to expand their vocabulary, strengthen their command of grammar, and achieve more confidence and fluency in speaking and writing while learning about the diversity of the Hispanic cultures. The skills acquired in this course will help reinforce students’ bilingual abilities and cultural competence.

This spe­cial top­ics course of­fers an in­ter­dis­ci­pli­nary ap­proach to in­ves­ti­gat­ing our built en­vi­ron­ment using a case study fo­cused on a spe­cific place each se­mes­ter. This course com­bines phys­i­cal ex­am­i­na­tion with in­for­ma­tion re­search and data col­lec­tion using method­olo­gies de­vel­oped in mul­ti­ple dis­ci­plines. Stu­dents from a va­ri­ety of de­part­ments en­gage in on-site ex­plo­ration and in-depth re­search of a lo­ca­tion in New York City.

This special topics course offers an interdisciplinary approach to investigating our built environment using a case study focused on a specific place each semester. This course combines physical examination with information research and data collection using methodologies developed in multiple disciplines. Students from a variety of departments engage in on-site exploration and in-depth research of a location in New York City.

This course will ex­plore the var­i­ous crit­i­cal health and safety is­sues and prob­lems af­fect­ing chil­dren and ado­les­cents. Areas to be ex­plored will in­clude nu­tri­tion, per­sonal hy­giene, med­ical care, first aid and safety, CPR, men­tal health, HIV and AIDS, sex­u­ally trans­mit­ted dis­eases, chronic and com­mu­ni­ca­ble dis­eases, sex­u­al­ity and birth con­trol.

This course will explore the various critical health and safety issues and problems affecting children and adolescents. Areas to be explored will include nutrition, personal hygiene, medical care, first aid and safety, CPR, mental health, HIV and AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases, chronic and communicable diseases, sexuality and birth control.
