Makini Valentine is an undergraduate student at The New York City College of Technology (City Tech), pursuing her bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. She’s originally from the Caribbean islands of Trinidad and Tobago where she obtained a diploma in Civil Engineering at the University of Trinidad and Tobago and was heavily involved in the 2012 student guild chapter. In 2013, she migrated to Brooklyn New York and received an Engineering Science Associate degree at Borough of Manhattan community College (BMCC) Summer 2017. Makini was introduced to Environmental Research opportunities at BMCC and continues to perform interdisciplinary research at City Tech, which includes data science, remote sensing and climate change. Because of her willingness to serve and learn she volunteered at multiple conferences, community services and currently participates in The Black Male Initiative program where she received the Dean’s list award during the Spring 2019 semester. She currently holds an Adjunct College Laboratory Technician (CLT) position for the CMCE 1115 Statics course. Makini’s grittiness forces her to climb the academic ladder and aim for a master’s degree in Earth System’s Science with an inclusion of Sustainability.
