Erik Larson started pushing buttons on computers since the mid 1970s, always infatuated with creating art with a computer. Starting with the Commodore 64 and a Texas Instrument 99/4A computers and working his way up to todays’ systems, Erik navigated his way through the changing landscapes of technology with ease. After graduating from American Univ. in 1997 Erik started out in television production and quickly moved on to producing 3D animations for News-In-Motion/Knight Ridder by 1998. After getting his MS from NYU in Digital Imaging and Design, Erik has primarily focused on commercial broadcast having his work shown on MTV, SHOWTIME, HBO, CBS New York, Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, and many others. Erik looks forward to many more years of pushing buttons.

Broadcast Design I

Through lectures, demonstrations and hands-on practice, students will learn how to create, produce and edit a digital video project. Topics include: (1) pre-production – creative concept, storyboarding, scripting, location selection, creative and production team member roles and responsibilities, props and casting; shot and lighting analysis; (2) production – recording video and audio, lighting; (3) post-production – processing, editing, compiling, final output to the web or DVD using software such as Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere and Adobe After Effects.

Motion Graphics I

Motion Graphics I

Introduction to the theory and principles of motion graphics. The course will explore the role of motion graphics in dynamic digital media for film, video, television, the internet, DVD interface design, video game design and interactive interface design. Integration of graphics, color, typography, photography and sound. Case studies of contemporary designers will be an integral part of lectures and laboratory exercises. Working individually or in teams, students will research, write, design, storyboard and produce motion graphics for film titles, promotional videos, advertising and television graphics using software such as After Effects, Photoshop and Illustrator.

Storyboard Concepts

Storyboard Concepts

The storyboard is the visual version of the script. It consists of a number of panels that show the visual action of a sequence in a logical narrative. The storyboard is used as a tool for production or to assist in the selling of ideas to clients. The emphasis in this class is on story, idea and development. Students will design and present storyboards for topics including commercials, film and television titles and video promotions.

Broadcast Design II

Broadcast Design II

Theory and practice in advanced forms of digital video. Emphasizes the integration of special effects incorporating typography, graphics and photography. Students create an advanced digital video project for output to the World Wide Web and/or DVD with software such as Adobe AfterEffects. Students also learn new protocols required for creating and delivering video for the World Wide Web and DVD.
