This course stud­ies the de­vel­op­ment of build­ing sys­tems as they occur dur­ing the de­sign de­vel­op­ment phase of ar­chi­tec­ture. Using case study re­search meth­ods, stu­dents an­a­lyze fac­tors, such as build­ing as­sem­blies and sys­tems, codes and gov­ern­ment reg­u­la­tions, human er­gonom­ics, and sus­tain­abil­ity, which af­fect build­ing con­struc­tion and use. Their so­lu­tions to these is­sues are in­te­grated into their final build­ing de­sign so­lu­tions. The stu­dent cre­ates a se­ries of re­ports and a set of con­struc­tion draw­ings using both ana­log meth­ods (hand sketch­ing and draw­ing) and dig­i­tal tools in­clud­ing CAD soft­ware and BIM (Build­ing In­for­ma­tion Mod­el­ing) tech­niques.

This course studies the development of building systems as they occur during the design development phase of architecture. Using case study research methods, students analyze factors, such as building assemblies and systems, codes and government regulations, human ergonomics, and sustainability, which affect building construction and use. Their solutions to these issues are integrated into their final building design solutions. The student creates a series of reports and a set of construction drawings using both analog methods (hand sketching and drawing) and digital tools including CAD software and BIM (Building Information Modeling) techniques.

This course, taught by Prof. Leon­hardt and my­self, is an in­tro­duc­tion to dig­i­tal fab­ri­ca­tion. It will ex­plore the qual­i­ties of ma­te­ri­als such as wood, con­crete, and plas­tics in the con­text of com­pu­ta­tional de­sign and dig­i­tal fab­ri­ca­tion think­ing and tech­niques. Pro­jects will pro­vide stu­dents with ex­pe­ri­ence in the use of a va­ri­ety of tools, equip­ment, con­cepts, and emerg­ing dig­i­tally-dri­ven tech­nolo­gies, in­clud­ing para­met­ric rule-based de­sign, sub­trac­tive fab­ri­ca­tion, as­sem­bly tech­niques, and it­er­a­tive de­sign processes

This course, taught by Prof. Leonhardt and myself, is an introduction to digital fabrication. It will explore the qualities of materials such as wood, concrete, and plastics in the context of computational design and digital fabrication thinking and techniques. Projects will provide students with experience in the use of a variety of tools, equipment, concepts, and emerging digitally-driven technologies, including parametric rule-based design, subtractive fabrication, assembly techniques, and iterative design processes
