ARTH 1102 History of Art: Renaissance to Modern
Survey of Western Art from 1300 to the Present
MTEC 3175, Experimental Game Design & Development, Fall 2018
This hands-on studio course will focus on the creation of innovative workable prototypes exploring expressive forms of gameplay using a variety of multi-media approaches, methodologies and materials. The aesthetics of game design, including asset and character development, level design, game play experience and delivery systems will be covered. Supplemental readings on the complex interplay between story and game will be explored to analyze effective narrative devices and game mechanics. The class will involve lectures on game theory, design exercises and in-depth analysis of works across commercial, art & social change sectors.
ENG2001 E221 Introduction to Literature ā Fiction Fall 2018
Introduction to Fiction is just that: an introduction to a literary genre that is massive in scope, and impossible to do justice to in one semester of study. So with that acknowledgement, this course will be devoted to the study of a diverse collection of short form fiction, with a focus on basic critical approaches including examinations of the foundational elements of fiction, the influence of personal and exterior factors in a writerās life and on his/her work, the relevance and irrelevance of genre delineations and taxonomy, and some of the more prevalent theoretical approaches to literary criticism. In this course, you will be exposed to work that might challenge your preconceived notions of what fiction is, what forms it can take, and what it is meant to accomplish. As such, I want to emphasize that in this course, we do not judge work as āgoodā or ābadā ā we will consider all work critically, i.e., via academic analysis, and hopefully expand our understanding of fiction through this process. In other words, this isnāt a book club, and I want you to concentrate your efforts away from casual reading and toward more rigorous, immersive strategies of engagement. Our class time will be largely devoted to discussions of the work, and how our analyses will form the basis for the courseās written assignments. Since this is a writing-intensive course, you must draw on the skills gained in the prerequisite course, ENG 1101, to meet the Outcomes outlined by the English Department (listed below, and on the Learning Outcomes sheet, posted in Open Lab), and to apply them to the written work in this course: two major papers, a reading journal, responses to assigned readings posted on the courseās Open Lab Dashboard, and copious notes to be taken in class.
MTEC3230, Mixed Reality for Immersive Worlds, SP2018
This course will explore the new frontier of virtual, augmented and mixed reality across different market sectors. Students will experiment with designing and developing game-based and interactive projects employing AR, VR, wearables, IoT, and machine learning for mobile, web and console environments. Students will learn the fundamentalsĀ ofĀ Unity development,Ā 3D modeling, stereoscopic perception and experiential design in the context of storytelling and content creation specific to these emerging forms. Students will work in small teams on collaborative projects with the latest head-mounted and sensor technology.
MTEC 2210, Game Design & Interactive Media, 2017
This course offers a cross-disciplinary foundation for the design of games and interactive multi-media technology for artists, engineers, scientists and technologists. Students will learn human-centered design principles and apply these methodologies to collaborative team-based projects across web interactive, mobile, games, virtual & augmented reality, biomedia and environmental installation. Using case studies, brainstorming processes, and rapid analog and digital prototyping, students learn design thinking and problem-solving techniques to enhance usability, incorporate sensory experience, influence perception, increase appeal, and make more effective interactive design decisions.
