ARCH 1230 Building Technology II
This course will study the basic materials of construction as well as the theory and practice of building technology. The course will include investigation of the assembly of building components and methods of construction while developing proficiency in both analog and digital drawing building information modeling (BIM) techniques, and professionally presented construction drawing page composition.
This course presents an introduction to basic materials of construction and the fundamental principles of architectural hand drafting and system analysis. The coursework includes weekly lectures, readings, and quizzes focusing on the study of material properties and applications with an emphasis on wood and masonry and shallow foundation systems. In addition, there is a series of architectural drawing assignments that includes surveying existing conditions, development of plans, elevations, sections, and basic details from foundation to roof of a case study structure.
ARCH2310 Design III, Spring 2014
This course is an exploration of abstract architectural design theory as an expression of three-dimensional space. The creation of comprehensive architectural design projects are developed following a building program and incorporating elements of site, enclosure, structure, material and technology. Design concepts and vocabulary are introduced and strengthened through design projects.
This course presents the basis for an understanding of structural behavior and design, with an emphasis placed on the theoretical and practical application of structural design principles for new and existing urban small-scale building structures. The fundamental scientific framework of mechanics, strength of materials, structural analysis and architectural design integration will be addressed. Conditions encountered during renovations and their solutions will be included. The course is presented in lecture and discussion sessions in conjunction with homework assignments. Students are expected to participate in class by asking and responding to questions, relating relevant experiences, offering opinions, etc. Exams and quizzes will be given based on class lectures and discussions, reading assignments and notes.
ARCH 1210 | ARCH 1291 DESIGN FOUNDATION II | VISUAL STUDIES II
Design Foundation and Visual Studies are integrally linked courses. Many of the projects feed on the knowledge derived from the paired course. This site contains course assignments, student work examples, resources, and readings.
