A re­quired course for all Com­mu­ni­ca­tion De­sign stu­dents. Top­ics in­clude cre­ative user in­ter­face de­sign and best work­flow prac­tices. Stu­dents de­sign a web­site using an HTML tem­plate and de­velop de­sign, ty­pog­ra­phy and web pro­gram­ming skills. HTML and CSS are taught.

A required course for all Communication Design students. Topics include creative user interface design and best workflow practices. Students design a website using an HTML template and develop design, typography and web programming skills. HTML and CSS are taught.

2 cl hrs, 2 lab hrs Ex­plores de­sign and type sen­si­bil­i­ties, chal­leng­ing stu­dents to strengthen their cre­ative and vi­sual aes­thet­ics. With em­pha­sis on sen­si­tiv­ity to type, ex­er­cises in­te­grate type within a va­ri­ety of dif­fer­ent medi­ums in­clud­ing page lay­outs as well as ki­netic de­sign. Pre­req­ui­site: COMD 1257

2 cl hrs, 2 lab hrs Explores design and type sensibilities, challenging students to strengthen their creative and visual aesthetics. With emphasis on sensitivity to type, exercises integrate type within a variety of different mediums including page layouts as well as kinetic design. Prerequisite: COMD 1257

In­tern­ship in Com­mu­ni­ca­tion De­sign On­line Mix (OM) Writ­ing In­ten­sive 2 cl hrs, 120 field hrs/se­mes­ter (BFA de­gree) As­sign­ment to field­work/study sit­u­a­tions of ap­prox­i­mately 12+ hours per week at an in­tern­ship site ap­proved by the de­part­ment In­tern­ship Co­or­di­na­tor: an ad­ver­tis­ing agency, graphic de­sign firm, cor­po­rate de­sign of­fice, pub­li­ca­tions art de­part­ment, pho­tog­ra­phy or il­lus­tra­tion stu­dio, TV or media pro­duc­tion com­pany. Each stu­dent keeps a blog/jour­nal to be shared in group sem­i­nars. Su­per­vi­sion is by fac­ulty and by the su­per­vi­sor at the in­tern­ship site. The class is a hy­brid class. Internship in Communication Design Online Mix (OM) Writing Intensive 2 cl hrs, 120 field hrs/semester (BFA degree) Assignment to fieldwork/study situations of approximately 12+ hours per week at an internship site approved by the department Internship Coordinator: an advertising agency, graphic design firm, corporate design office, publications art department, photography or illustration studio, TV or media production company. Each student keeps a blog/journal to be shared in group seminars. Supervision is by faculty and by the supervisor at the internship site. The class is a hybrid class. Internships may be undertaken during the spring, summer and fall semesters. Prerequisites: COMD 3701 or COMD 4701 or department approval. Course offered spring, summer and fall semesters Students will be required to keep a learning journal of their internship in the form of a blog using Open Lab.

This is a be­gin­ning course that ex­plores the tech­ni­cal and aes­thetic con­cerns of pho­tog­ra­phy. Using dSLR cam­eras, pro­fes­sional light­ing equip­ment and soft­ware, stu­dents will ex­plore fun­da­men­tal con­cepts of light, ex­po­sure, and com­po­si­tion in order to de­velop the abil­ity to con­trol pho­to­graphic style to cre­ate vi­su­ally en­gag­ing im­ages.

This is a beginning course that explores the technical and aesthetic concerns of photography. Using dSLR cameras, professional lighting equipment and software, students will explore fundamental concepts of light, exposure, and composition in order to develop the ability to control photographic style to create visually engaging images.

This course in­tro­duces stu­dents to core con­cepts in the graphic com­mu­ni­ca­tions field in­clud­ing ty­pog­ra­phy, color the­ory, de­sign and pro­duc­tion ter­mi­nol­ogy, re­pro­duc­tion processes, file for­mats and sub­strates. Dur­ing the se­mes­ter, stu­dents will com­plete three pages of their own ePort­fo­lio web site. Lec­tures will pro­vide stu­dents with a his­tor­i­cal per­spec­tive of the graphic com­mu­ni­ca­tions field as well as dis­cussing cur­rent prac­tices and fu­ture trends.

This course introduces students to core concepts in the graphic communications field including typography, color theory, design and production terminology, reproduction processes, file formats and substrates. During the semester, students will complete three pages of their own ePortfolio web site. Lectures will provide students with a historical perspective of the graphic communications field as well as discussing current practices and future trends.
