This course will study the basic ma­te­ri­als of con­struc­tion as well as the the­ory and prac­tice of build­ing tech­nol­ogy. The course will in­clude in­ves­ti­ga­tion of the as­sem­bly of build­ing com­po­nents and meth­ods of con­struc­tion while de­vel­op­ing pro­fi­ciency in both ana­log and dig­i­tal draw­ing build­ing in­for­ma­tion mod­el­ing (BIM) tech­niques, and pro­fes­sion­ally pre­sented con­struc­tion draw­ing page com­po­si­tion.

This course will study the basic materials of construction as well as the theory and practice of building technology. The course will include investigation of the assembly of building components and methods of construction while developing proficiency in both analog and digital drawing building information modeling (BIM) techniques, and professionally presented construction drawing page composition.

This in­ter­dis­ci­pli­nary course ex­am­ines sci­ence fic­tion texts from a physics per­spec­tive, fo­cus­ing on both the long and short-term abil­ity of sci­ence fic­tion to in­spire and give eth­i­cal bound­aries to oth­er­wise ab­stract mod­el­ing of the­o­ret­i­cal physics. In turn, the course will also demon­strate how the field of physics his­tor­i­cally in­formed the de­vel­op­ment of sci­ence fic­tion and cul­ture. Sig­nif­i­cant themes and trends in the fu­tur­is­tic worlds of sci­ence fic­tion, such as space ex­plo­ration and nan­otech­nol­ogy will be dis­cussed along­side the ways that pri­vate in­dus­try, gov­ern­ment, and global sci­en­tific com­mu­ni­ties ap­proach the pol­i­tics of en­vi­sion­ing the fu­ture.

This interdisciplinary course examines science fiction texts from a physics perspective, focusing on both the long and short-term ability of science fiction to inspire and give ethical boundaries to otherwise abstract modeling of theoretical physics. In turn, the course will also demonstrate how the field of physics historically informed the development of science fiction and culture. Significant themes and trends in the futuristic worlds of science fiction, such as space exploration and nanotechnology will be discussed alongside the ways that private industry, government, and global scientific communities approach the politics of envisioning the future.

Course De­scrip­tion: Ar­chi­tec­tural Tech­nol­ogy from pre­his­toric times to the pre­sent, stress­ing the de­vel­op­ment of struc­tural sys­tems and the ex­plo­ration of ma­te­ri­als. This course will also ex­plore the in­ter­ac­tion of build­ing de­sign and his­toric so­cio-eco­nomic de­ter­mi­nants. This is a writ­ing in­ten­sive course.

Course Description: Architectural Technology from prehistoric times to the present, stressing the development of structural systems and the exploration of materials. This course will also explore the interaction of building design and historic socio-economic determinants. This is a writing intensive course.
