A History of Art and Architecture from the Prehistoric Era to the Present

A sur­vey of key el­e­ments of phys­i­cal ge­og­ra­phy pre­sented in the con­text of human ac­tiv­ity and its re­la­tion to the phys­i­cal world. Top­ics in­clude world sur­face fea­tures, cli­mate and weather, the seas, and nat­ural re­sources.

A survey of key elements of physical geography presented in the context of human activity and its relation to the physical world. Topics include world surface features, climate and weather, the seas, and natural resources.

SUS­TAIN­ABIL­ITY IN HOS­PI­TAL­ITY – This learn­ing com­mu­nity will in­tro­duce the 21st Cen­tury rel­e­vance of sus­tain­abil­ity in the hos­pi­tal­ity in­dus­try and in­cor­po­rat­ing the con­cept con­nect­ing the var­i­ous foun­da­tions taught in these two in­tro­duc­tory man­age­ment classes. Con­nec­tions will be made as stu­dents in­ves­ti­gate their ca­reer op­tions and widen their scope of in­dus­try knowl­edge. Stu­dents will learn how to es­tab­lish a pro­fes­sional elec­tronic pro­file and sim­u­late a ca­reer ex­plo­ration search.

SUSTAINABILITY IN HOSPITALITY – This learning community will introduce the 21st Century relevance of sustainability in the hospitality industry and incorporating the concept connecting the various foundations taught in these two introductory management classes. Connections will be made as students investigate their career options and widen their scope of industry knowledge. Students will learn how to establish a professional electronic profile and simulate a career exploration search.

The more it tells you the less you know..” — Diane Arbus This course sur­veys the his­tory of pho­tog­ra­phy from its be­gin­nings in the early nine­teenth cen­tury to the pre­sent. We will ex­am­ine the use of pho­tog­ra­phy for aes­thetic, doc­u­men­tary, and “sci­en­tific” pur­poses, styl­is­tic shifts in pho­tog­ra­phy re­lated to aes­thetic con­cerns, and vary­ing in­ter­pre­ta­tions of sub­ject mat­ter based on so­cial and cul­tural con­cerns at spe­cific mo­ments in his­tory. We will also con­sider the re­la­tion­ship be­tween pho­tog­ra­phy and the vi­sual arts in gen­eral, which cul­mi­nates with the pri­macy of pho­tog­ra­phy as a medium by the late twen­ti­eth cen­tury. “A photograph is a secret about a secret. The more it tells you the less you know..” — Diane Arbus This course surveys the history of photography from its beginnings in the early nineteenth century to the present. We will examine the use of photography for aesthetic, documentary, and “scientific” purposes, stylistic shifts in photography related to aesthetic concerns, and varying interpretations of subject matter based on social and cultural concerns at specific moments in history. We will also consider the relationship between photography and the visual arts in general, which culminates with the primacy of photography as a medium by the late twentieth century.
