My Courses
English 3401, Section E290/Law Through Literature (Fall, 2016)
In this section of English 3401, Law Through Literature, we will examine depictions of law in poetry, fiction, essays and drama by post-1900 writers from Great Britain and Ireland. Although our reading list for the semester consists of a mere sampling of what has been written on the theme of law in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland between 1900 and 2015, the texts we shall explore will give us a sense of how law operates as both a formal and informal institution, its relationship to the communities in which it respectfully is implemented and the extent to which it serves as a vehicle of justice. The complexity of these readings will expand your understanding of the human condition and the contexts that inform it while providing you with an opportunity to hone your analytical abilities as a reader, writer and thinker.
