This course teaches students on how to design functional mechanical components and systems using engineering knowledge, communication skills, and design principles they learned from the Mathematics, Physics, Communication and library art courses, Engineering Statics, Strength of Materials, Materials Sciences, Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software packages. Students are required to complete a multidisciplinary hands-on design project utilizing concurrent engineering approach incorporating mechanical and electronic and software design into their design work.

This is a follow-up course of the two product design courses (IND 3610, Product Design I, and IND 4710, Product Design II). It provides graduating students a hand-on opportunity to practice concurrent engineering design. It requires students to pull all the knowledge and skills they acquired in early courses and apply them towards the design and implementation of a product thus giving the students an opportunity to experience team-based design under conditions that closely resemble current industry practice. Students will also develop and sharpen skills in team organization, time management, self-discipline, and technical writing, in order to be successful in this course.

Students will explore information issues, especially in terms of their relevance today: how information is produced and organized in both traditional and emerging media, how information access is affected by political, economic and cultural factors, and the ethics of information use. Students will also acquire the practical skills of locating information sources in a variety of media and formats, critical evaluation of sources, and documentation and citation of traditional and emerging media and technologies. Students will apply what they learn to create and present research and documentation projects.
