In­tern­ship in Ad­ver­tis­ing Graphic De­sign As­sign­ment to field work/study sit­u­a­tions of ap­prox­i­mately eight to ten plus hours per week at a graphic arts-re­lated in­tern­ship site ap­proved by the de­part­ment in­tern­ship di­rec­tor. Sites may be in areas such as ad­ver­tis­ing, print­ing, cor­po­rate com­mu­ni­ca­tions or pub­lish­ing. Stu­dents keep a log/jour­nal to be shared in group sem­i­nars/dis­cus­sions. Su­per­vi­sion is by fac­ulty and by the job su­per­vi­sor. Stu­dents will be re­quired to keep a learn­ing jour­nal of their in­tern­ship in the form of a blog using Open­lab.

Internship in Advertising Graphic Design Assignment to field work/study situations of approximately eight to ten plus hours per week at a graphic arts-related internship site approved by the department internship director. Sites may be in areas such as advertising, printing, corporate communications or publishing. Students keep a log/journal to be shared in group seminars/discussions. Supervision is by faculty and by the job supervisor. Students will be required to keep a learning journal of their internship in the form of a blog using Openlab.

Ad­vanced web de­sign is a con­tin­u­a­tion of AD­V2450 Web I, a pre­req­ui­site of this course. Stu­dents will study, in fur­ther de­tail, HTML and CSS to en­sure that they have a solid foun­da­tion. It is as­sumed that stu­dents have a solid grasp of Pho­to­shop and Il­lus­tra­tor, and un­der­stand the proper web de­sign work­flow. The course is fo­cused on com­plet­ing a web site, de­sign­ing and build­ing it, as well as writ­ing all the con­tent for the site. A port­fo­lio site is not ap­pro­pri­ate for the final pro­ject, and will not be ac­cept­able. Advanced web design is a continuation of ADV2450 Web I, a prerequisite of this course. Students will study, in further detail, HTML and CSS to ensure that they have a solid foundation. It is assumed that students have a solid grasp of Photoshop and Illustrator, and understand the proper web design workflow. The course is focused on completing a web site, designing and building it, as well as writing all the content for the site. A portfolio site is not appropriate for the final project, and will not be acceptable. Search Engine Optimization, Analytics, and web marketing strategies will be reviewed, and implemented. An in­tro­duc­tion to the basic com­po­nents and prac­tices of pre­pro­duc­tion and pro­duc­tion method­olo­gies for con­tent cre­ation in com­mer­cial video and film pro­duc­tion. Through lec­tures, read­ing as­sign­ments, screen­ings and prac­tice, stu­dents will learn the ba­sics of all stages of pro­duc­tion in­clu­sive of the processes of form­ing and work­ing in pro­duc­tion man­age­ment teams, cre­at­ing ef­fec­tive pro­duc­tion aes­thet­ics in pre-­‐ pro­duc­tion and pro­duc­tion stages, scriptwrit­ing and sto­ry­board­ing, cin­e­matog­ra­phy aes­thet­ics (light­ing and cam­era), and de­sign and graph­ics func­tions in edit­ing. Stu­dents will ex­plore sev­eral modes of com­mu­ni­ca­tion such as com­mer­cials, pub­lic ser­vice an­nounce­ments, fic­tive works, doc­u­men­tary and jour­nal­ism and learn how to con­vey in­for­ma­tion and mes­sages to a tar­get au­di­ence.

An introduction to the basic components and practices of preproduction and production methodologies for content creation in commercial video and film production. Through lectures, reading assignments, screenings and practice, students will learn the basics of all stages of production inclusive of the processes of forming and working in production management teams, creating effective production aesthetics in pre-­‐ production and production stages, scriptwriting and storyboarding, cinematography aesthetics (lighting and camera), and design and graphics functions in editing. Students will explore several modes of communication such as commercials, public service announcements, fictive works, documentary and journalism and learn how to convey information and messages to a target audience.

This course in­tro­duces stu­dents to core con­cepts in the graphic com­mu­ni­ca­tions field. Lec­tures will pro­vide his­tor­i­cal per­spec­tive as well as ex­am­in­ing cur­rent prac­tice and fu­ture media trends. Stu­dents will ex­am­ine and work with dig­i­tal tech­nolo­gies for print and the web such as Portable Doc­u­ment For­mats (PDF) and Ex­ten­si­ble Hy­per­text Markup Lan­guage (XHTML). Ex­am­i­na­tion of the role of ty­pog­ra­phy, paper, color the­ory and image cap­ture in the de­sign and pro­duc­tion process. Stu­dents will also de­velop and main­tain an ePort­fo­lio fol­low­ing an ori­en­ta­tion in the Col­lege e-Port­fo­lio lab. Two field trips will be an in­te­gral part of the course.

This course introduces students to core concepts in the graphic communications field. Lectures will provide historical perspective as well as examining current practice and future media trends. Students will examine and work with digital technologies for print and the web such as Portable Document Formats (PDF) and Extensible Hypertext Markup Language (XHTML). Examination of the role of typography, paper, color theory and image capture in the design and production process. Students will also develop and maintain an ePortfolio following an orientation in the College e-Portfolio lab. Two field trips will be an integral part of the course.
