Stu­dents crit­i­cally read, an­a­lyze, and write about the pop­u­lar genre of the Gothic. As rep­re­sented in both lit­er­ary and vi­sual terms, in both Eu­rope and the United States be­gin­ning in the late-18th cen­tury to today. Key con­cepts in­clude hor­ror, haunt­ing, mad­ness, and mon­sters.

Students critically read, analyze, and write about the popular genre of the Gothic. As represented in both literary and visual terms, in both Europe and the United States beginning in the late-18th century to today. Key concepts include horror, haunting, madness, and monsters.

An in­tro­duc­tion to basic ma­te­ri­als of con­struc­tion and the fun­da­men­tal prin­ci­pals of hand draft­ing and sys­tem analy­sis. The course­work in­cludes sur­vey­ing ex­ist­ing con­di­tions, de­vel­op­ment of plans, el­e­va­tions, and sec­tions, and basic de­tails as well as the study of ma­te­r­ial prop­er­ties and ap­pli­ca­tions.

An introduction to basic materials of construction and the fundamental principals of hand drafting and system analysis. The coursework includes surveying existing conditions, development of plans, elevations, and sections, and basic details as well as the study of material properties and applications.

Where there was a blank page–vir­tual or oth­er­wise–and you fill it with your words, you have, in fact, drawn on your in­tel­lec­tual re­sources to cre­ate pat­terns of mean­ing with those words. “Cre­ative writ­ing,” how­ever, gen­er­ally refers to po­etry, fic­tion, drama, and some forms of non-fic­tion–mem­oirs and nar­ra­tives that use the tech­niques of story-telling. We will focus on un­der­stand­ing how form and mean­ing work to­gether and on un­der­stand­ing the types and com­plex­i­ties of each genre–no­tably, fic­tion, non-fic­tion, po­etry, drama, and cross-gen­res–so each stu­dent can begin to de­velop their unique, in­di­vid­ual voice.

We will focus on understanding how form and meaning work together and on understanding the types and complexities of each genre–notably, fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama, and cross-genres–so each student can begin to develop their unique, individual voice.
