This course will focus on lit­er­a­ture writ­ten by or fea­tur­ing per­spec­tives from out­side of dom­i­nant cul­ture. Fo­cus­ing specif­i­cally on the 20th cen­tury Amer­i­can novel but also in­clud­ing texts from var­i­ous gen­res, eras, and lo­cales, the read­ings will rep­re­sent an op­po­si­tional and/or vari­ant ap­proach to the con­ven­tions and power struc­ture of the time and place in which they were writ­ten.

This course will focus on literature written by or featuring perspectives from outside of dominant culture. Focusing specifically on the 20th century American novel but also including texts from various genres, eras, and locales, the readings will represent an oppositional and/or variant approach to the conventions and power structure of the time and place in which they were written.
