The change In Modern IBM

The company IBM was born in the state of New York City on June 16, 1911 as a Computing, recording Company and Tabulating. This was started because Dr. Herman Hollerith who conducted the first practical tabulating system which then was patent, and so later Dr.Herman has become one of IBM/ CTR, predecessors for the company.

As well within the company, their main focus has always been the innovation and modernism of business and technology to succeed during the time but to represent there change throughout history it must be shown within the identity and brand itself which is their logo. So the reason why IBM changed their logo identity, is so they could show the transition and evolution of their technology in their company.

For the first logo for IBM that describes the change in logo to represent the upgrade and success of the company was during the year of 1924, had a logo which has the new brand name called Business International Machines which is distorted in a spherical way to represent a globe as well as a sash added to represent the axis and the reason to why the brand’s name was change was because the Computing Tabulating Recording Company (CTR) (old IBM identity name)  was experiencing some evolution in the company because how the company started working internationally and not locally anymore causing the new brand name and logo to International Business Machines Corporation. This changes were made because of the growth and extension of CTR’s activities around the world.

Then soon after many years after  sticking to the new brand identity, in the year of 1947 to 1956 International Business Machines Corporation later on changed their name to IBM because they were evolving into working with tech such as computers. (IBM)

Which later on led to there new logo as stated by IBM, “ IBM borrowed on the equities in its brand image and reputation to help carry it through a difficult transition from the punched-card tabulating business to computers.” So because of this transition IBM had began to change to the logotype, the first in 22 years. The familiar International Business Machines Corporation  “globe” was then replaced with the simple letters “IBM” in a typeface called Beton Bold.

Then after many years the Logo had to once again for the last time must change their logo to keep up with the modern times. For the new logo that has is still being used in the present was done and designed by Paul Rand who introduced this logo with 8 stripes was born in 1972 to replace the old 13-stripe logo.  As well they used a blue to represent the company’s nickname called BIG BLUE . The reasoning for this final transformation was because they wanted to have consistent logo which can be used for many years to come and to represent their wealth of the growth in their innovating technology and businesses. As stated  “Horizontal stripes now replaced the solid letters to suggest “speed and dynamism.” In the intervening quarter-century, the basic design has remained constant” (suree).
