I’m doing an internship with NYPIRG for my spring 2024 semester.NYPIRG was founded back in 1973 by Donald Kemp Ross, an American public interest lawyer.it is a nonprofit organization that advocates for the public interest of New York residents. With over 25 chapters at colleges across New York, NYPIRG mobilizes thousands of student activists each year to address various socioeconomic issues that affect New Yorkers, for instance:
- Voting Rights: Expanding voter access and participation in NY through outreach, advocacy, media, and litigation.
- Energy & Environment: Supporting a transition to renewable energy and fighting climate change in NY.
- Public Health: Protecting public health through advocacy on healthcare access, drug pricing, product safety, tobacco control, etc.
- Consumer Protection: Offering help and information to New York residents who’ve faced unfair treatment, especially in legal matters
- Higher Education Affordability: Promoting policies to make college more affordable and reduce student debt.
- NYC Mass Transit: Advocating for safe, reliable, and affordable public transit in New York City.
Recently, NYPIRG made headlines for their efforts to clean up local rivers and streams. They organized community clean-up events and lobbied for strict pollution laws. They also celebrated their 50th anniversary, reflecting on all the positive changes they’ve made over the years
