MAT 4030 – History of Mathematics

The course examines the historical development of mathematical concepts from the origins of algebra and geometry in the ancient civilizations of Egypt and Mesopotamia through the advent of demonstrative mathematics of ancient Greeks to the discovery of Calculus, non-Euclidian geometries, and formal mathematics in the 17th-20th century Europe. Topics include a historical examination of the development of number systems, methods of demonstration, geometry, number theory, algebra, Calculus, and non-Euclidean geometries.
