Geocoding and Mapping Projects

Virtual place-based learning with Carto*

Working in teams and using data sets from NYC Open Data and Carto, an open source geocoding/mapping software, students prepared and presented maps.

This assignment asked students to then prepare a short paper summarizing what their datasets show and the reasons for their choice of data to examine. Students also considered the environmental significance of what the data show and the specific problems (or positive information) the data on their maps point to. They were then asked to think about remediation – specific policy actions that could be taken to address problems. In the case of a positive trend such as intensive or extensive green roof plantings, they were asked to reflect on the benefits of such projects and to suggest steps that should be taken to expand on them.

Students presented their projects during week 7 of the semester.
