My research question is Can video games be used for educational purposes? Video games are not just entertainment, they are also powerful tools that can enhance learning by engaging students in interactive, immersive, and creative ways. Their potential lies in encouraging critical thinking, literacy, and problem-solving skills that traditional methods sometimes fail to achieve. My intended audience is educators and parents who are skeptical about the role of video games in learning. These people influence student’s learning environments and could benefit from seeing how video games can enhance traditional education. I am considering either a video essay or a podcast. A video essay would allow me to visually demonstrate examples of educational games, showing their mechanics and impact on learning. This genre would engage my audience with visuals, narration, and gameplay clips. Doing a podcast would let me explore the topic conversationally, possibly doing it as an informational podcast. Both genres allow for an engaging, informative presentation, but I am closer toward a video essay because of how visually engaging it is. I will start by outlining key points from my research and gathering specific examples of educational video games. For example, if I do video essay, I will also collect clips from relevant games and draft a script. My main concern is time management. Editing a video essay or recording a podcast may take longer than expected, especially with technical aspects like video editing or quality. I will be using Balthazar: China’s Game of Spies for my mentor text.
