Summary of Schools Kill Curiosity – Jazmine Saldana

In the article “Schools Kill Curiosity” by Wendy Berliner it’s expresses how the traditional education system restricts children’s curiosity at a very young age, causing further issues once adults. They become less vocal and start to ask less and less questions, according to research by Susan Engel in paragraph 9 ” She found the youngest children in an American suburban elementary school asked between two and five questions in a two-hour period. Even worse, as they got older the children gave up asking altogether.” Children aren’t afraid to ask questions unless put into an environment that discourages them and instead views questions as interruptions to the lesson. This also affects children’s ability to develop critical thinking skills and affects their learning ability. Teachers instead prioritize good behavior and staying focused, its indicated that curiosity should be prioritized as well by all mentors for a good foundation to early learning. Students who weren’t shut down when asking questions but instead received an answer actually advanced academically and were able to fully understand topics and subjects. Teachers and mentors have a certain cirrocumuli to meet so there isn’t always time to prioritize or encourage curiosity, changes need to be made in the education system.
