I live my life based on three qualities: compassion, selflessness and respect. My life philosophy is to contribute to society in a way that would make society better as a whole. My life philosophy is the same as my nursing philosophy. This means that in my younger years I will nurture the sick, the elder and the disadvantage to the best of my ability. And in my older years I will teach and share my wisdom and experiences to the next generation. When a person is sick and in pain, compassion and respect for autonomy goes a long way.

As a child I knew that I wanted a career in healthcare. I want to serve the sick in a way that would make them feel human. Many times patients are treated as a medical record number and they get pushed along until they get discharged. My goal is to make a difference in every one of my patients’ lives even if the change is as minute as waking up happier than yesterday. I want to make a difference!

My first medical career was in Radiology. I graduated Stony Brook University with a Bachelor of Science in Radiology and worked as a CT technologist for seven years in NYU Medical Center. Although my position allows me to play an integral part in a multifaceted system of healthcare, it has only heightened my desire to be involved in more levels of patient diagnosis and care. I had two options: become a physician or become a nurse. In my years of experience I have seen physicians lack compassion, not intentional but due to the nature of their profession. Nurses, on the hand, are the caretakers, the gatekeepers and the advocators. For these reasons, I chose nursing. We are present from start to finish, whether it’s managing the different exams or providing bedside care, we are the first ones to assess the situation. We are culturally diverse and ethnically driven. In this way we are essential supports for the doctors and even more vital in providing a higher quality of care for the patients.

I believe that nursing provides a variety of ways to improve society. My plan for the future would be to teach and hopefully influence the next generation to be compassionate, selfless and respectful to everyone including oneself. Currently I am a new nurse that is starting to get his feet wet. I look forward to providing when the patients are in need, and soothe when they are apprehensive. There is no other joy than a patient being discharge and knowing that I have played a role in making them better. They might not remember my name but they will always remember their experience with the nurse.
