Based on Learning Styles and Strategies assessment tool of Dr. Felder and Soloman, my dominant learning style is: Active Learner. According to the theory I tend to retain and understand information best by doing them.
This is not surprising to me. After high school I went to an agriculture school where I performed pretty well since the school’s philosophy was “Apprender Haciendo” learning by doing. I also tend to do better in course material when I help a classmate to understand the material. I like live class discussion.
According to the assessment tool at the beginning of a conflict I tend to be calm trying to find solution. If solution delayed to happen I also could become emotional and get strong about the lack of response.
Based on this assessment tool, my personality style is:
Extroverted – Sensing- Thinking- Judging
Making effective clinical decision is not an easy task and it does not come with a magic stick. Nurses need to build over the time their ability of making effective clinical decision. It also requires knowledge of the field of expertise; ability to identify the problem that needs to be resolved. Nurses need to constantly be faithful to the nursing process which could guide your clinical decision and avoid mistakes. The personality of the nurse plays a huge role in effective clinical decision. The nurse thinks first before react. The nurse willing to take extract steps to have goals accomplish. The nurse not afraid of talking about his or her limitation in a particular subject and seek for help. The nurse believes in continuum education and always looking for new ways of resolving problems based on evidence based practice.
Knowing that effective decision making is not an easy task so I will apply those knowledge to nurses that I will precept. I will allow time for new nurses to grow. I will share my experience with them. I will encourage innovation and welcome new ideas. I will practice a lifetime of learning.
