LL4 – Lighting for Mood

1. When and why would you as an art director or a photographer chose traditional portrait lighting with a main light, fill and background light for a portrait? When you’re trying to achieve a traditional portrait, there isn’t much expression (not too much happiness or dullness), just a ‘class portrait’ type emotion. When taking a traditional portrait, short side and broad light are best for this lighting.

2. When and why would you as an art director or a photographer chose side light for a portrait? Are there any disadvantages to side light? Sidelight is perfect to emphasize texture, dimensions and shapes/patterns. You can see the contour of the subject’s face. Some disadvantage is filling some dark areas with light (that might be too bright).

3. When and why would you as an art director or a photographer chose front light for a portrait? Are there any disadvantages to front light? Front light helps illuminate the subject’s face. It brighten’s up the face. Sometimes it can be too harsh of the lighting and will be unbalanced.

4. When and why would you as an art director or a photographer decide to use wide-angle distortion in a portrait? Wide angle distortion is a unique perspective that applies when the subject’s face is closer to the lens which makes them bigger while the rest of the subject is smaller (and away from the camera).

Portrait Basics

What are important factors to consider shooting a portrait?

Shooting a portrait requires lighting from one of the sides of the face including short lighting that illuminates from one side of the face. The light comes from the angles which casts short shadows.

What is the difference between broad and short lighting?

Broad lighting is when the main light is directed at the side of the face which is closest to the camera. It adds ‘weight’ to the face. Short lighting is when the shadow is casted on the ‘smaller’ side of the face. The shadow is right in front of the frame.

In a classic basic portrait set up, what is the function of the main light?

The main light is the front view, and the subject faces the camera. This applies to the soft box which is 45 degrees between the camera and backdrop. This avoids casting a shadow.

In a classic basic portrait set up, what is the function of the background light?

Background light is presented behind the subject which makes the photo look ‘corporate’ and ‘serious’ environment. It makes the subject stand out from the lighting behind them.

In a classic basic portrait set up, what is the function of the fill light?

Fill lights are soft which produces a high key, low contrast tone. They are often used in scenes and well-lit areas.
