ARTH 1204: 20th Century Dress and Culture

Project Description

This project entails writing a five-page research paper exploring fashionable dress within its cultural, social, and historical contexts during the 20th century. The paper begins by selecting a primary source—a mediated image such as a painting, photograph, advertisement, or film still—and providing a detailed description of it. Using secondary sources, the image is analyzed to uncover the social and cultural influences surrounding the garment or fashion depicted, including its materials, creation, intended audience, and messages conveyed. The central aim is to interpret what the chosen artifact reveals about the era in which it was made and worn. Finally, the paper includes a personal analysis of the image’s impact, evaluating its significance as a representation of fashionable dress in the 20th century.
