My personal definition of nursing is individuals who is dedicated to their work. A nurse is a hard working individual who has the skills, commitment and strength to care for others at the highest level of functioning. They are selfless in the sense they give up a part of their life to constantly improve, learn and go the extra mile for their patients. But, they also deserve the love that they pour into their work. In order for a nurse to function at their best, they need to dedicate time for themselves as well, through self-care.

My clinical nursing experiences have shaped me into the nurse I am today; including the positive and the negative ones. The positive experiences have shown me I am made to be a nurse. The negative experiences have impacted me as well and I have learned from them. Nursing is important to me because it gives me a sense of belonging and gives my life meaning.

As a nurse it is important to realize your actions impact others and not letting your own personal beliefs impact the care you provide. We accept our patients, and recognize each patient is their own individual person. They deserve individualized patient care that is tailored to their needs. Viewing the patient as a whole is key to providing the best patient care.

I believe the qualities that encompass the meaning of a nurse is compassion, determination, and personable. A nurse that shows they care will speak volumes to the patient. They also need to be determined to gain more knowledge. Lastly, someone that is personable will make it easier to communicate with patients.
