My Nursing Philosophy

Jean Watson’s nursing philosophy of caring addresses how nurses express care to their patients. Caring is central to nursing practice, and promotes health better than a simple medical cure. She believes that a holistic approach to health care is central to the practice of caring in nursing. There are ten primary carative factors according to Jean Watson. I always have the following two as my nursing philosophy when taking care of patients: the development of a helping- trust relationship and the promotion of interpersonal teaching-learning. Communication is the strongest tool in establishing rapport and caring. Nurses are the primary caregiver and patients’ advocate of our patients, and they are depending on us. We need to effectively communicate with patients and their family in order to understand their needs. Nurses also need to focus on the learning process as much as the teaching process to promote effective learning outcome.

My personal nursing philosophy is also to provide quality of patient care through my passion, caring and friendly personality. I would always put clients’ holistic health as priority. Patient care outcome also greatly depends on nurses’ clinical experience and up-to-date knowledge. Due to patient care becomes more complex, challenged and the emergence of high technologies, nurses need higher education and more critical thinking to improve patient safety in order to provide high quality and cost effective patient care. Therefore, Nurses’ knowledge should be continuously nurtured through advance workshops, higher degrees and board certification. A positive attitude is needed to bring a positive patient care outcome.
