ARESTIN is an antibiotic a dental professional places directly into infected gum pockets after a scaling and root planing (SRP) procedure. ARESTIN + SRP fights harmful bacteria deeper—and longer—than SRP alone. (www.arestin.com)
My clinical experience:
ARESTIN CLINICAL CASE #1
I was able to place 3 sites of Arestin product on Ms. N. The date I placed Arestin was on 11/17/2021. The sites where I placed the Arestin were #13 MB, #14 DL, and #15 ML. The initial pocket depth readings were:
- #13 MB-6mm (BOP)
- #14 DL-5mm (BOP)
- 15 ML-6mm (BOP)
I enjoyed placing Arestin and found it quick and easy to do. Ms. N was excited for the treatment and had stated she had Arestin placed in her periodontal pockets before. Ms. N came back for a revisit appointment on 12/7/2021 where I was able to evaluate the previous Arestin placement procedure. When I rechecked the areas, I initially got reduced pocket readings that were all 4 mm. When taking a second reading after finishing the dental cleaning appointment, I observed different readings that reflected the original readings of 5-6 mm. Final recorded pocket depth readings were:
- #13 MB-6mm
- #14 DL- 5mm
- #15 ML-6mm (BOP)
Reduced BOP was observed but my overall experience while placing Arestin on Ms. N was not how I thought it would be.
ARESTIN CLINICAL CASE #2
I was able to place 1 site of Arestin product on another students patient Ms. R. The date I placed Arestin on Ms. R was on 03/312022. The site where I placed the Arestin was #27MB. The initial pocket depth readings were:
- #27MB-5mm (BOP)
Ms. R came back for a revelation on 05/09/2022. When I rechecked the areas, I noticed the pocket depth on #27MB reduced to 3mm with no BOP. Ms. R had other sites of Arestin placed by another student where their readings were evaluated and while not all sites showed signs of reduced pocket depths the majority did. I had a great experience with this case and hope to be able to place more sites of Arestin in the future.
