Introduction

Why I chose Dental Hygiene

Ever since I was young, the dental field really stood out to me.  I always enjoyed visiting the dentist as a child-probably due to always getting a toy at the end :). Toy aside, my mother worked in dentistry and always made sure to place importance on oral hygiene care.  I enjoyed my dental checkups and eventually (due to the state of my dentition) experienced many dental specialists.

I was born without #24 & #25, so I had to visit multiple dental specialists to complete orthodontia, oral surgery (of primary dentition), and a prosthodontist for bridge fabrication.  I continued to have great experiences with every dental visit and there was A LOT of them.

When I was 17, I got my first job as a file clerk at a dental office.  I enjoyed the job and really connected with the staff.  I left the office after a year or so to pursue other paths but was quickly drawn back to dentistry.  I was contacted by my previous manager to come work at a new office as a dental assistant.  I had no formal training and was very nervous but I accepted her offer and thats when my career and passions really took off.  I never knew how much I truly enjoyed dentistry until I accepted the job as a dental assistant.

I really enjoyed the patients, the knowledge, and the entire dental atmosphere.  I learned so much about the field and every day was a new opportunity to help patients.

I continued to be a dental assistant at multiple practices & specialities for about 9 years then made the commitment to re-enter academia with a goal of becoming a dental hygienist.  I had been told by multiple dental professionals (and patients) that I have such a great personality with patients and my love for dentistry pores out when I speak of it.  I knew the road would be challenging ahead but pursued and am so happy I did.

Becoming a healthcare clinician has changed a lot for me in this field.  I went from catering to the doctors and hygienists to focusing 100% on total patient care. Being able to connect with patients and help them with their healthcare is very rewarding.

From my time in the dental hygiene program I have received many notes, praise, and compliments from my patients.  When I hear the way they compliment me I know I chose the right path and I strive to constantly do the best I can.

I am excited to continue my dental journey as a New York City College of Technology Dental Hygienist Graduate.  I plan to use my newly acquired skills to help patients receive the best quality health care and provide as many great experiences to my patients as I have received myself in the past!
