OPENING TASK/DO NOW: Using the Milady textbook, define the term hair lightening. 

MOTIVATION: An oxidizing agent has to be mixed with a developer in order for hair to lift. What determines the amount of lift ? For the greatest amount of lift what would be the best volume to use ?

AIM: What are the various forms of hair hair lighteners ?

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES:  Students Will Be Able To (SWBAT):

SPECIAL EQUIPMENT  –  MATERIALS  –  PREPARATION

Developer, gloves, face mask, uniform, mannequin, tint brushes, color bowls, shampoo and conditioner.

PRESENTATION: 

Q:What is hair lightening ?

A: Hair lightening or decolourizing (removing color )involving diffusing natural or artificial color from hair

Q:What are the three types of lighteners ? 

A:The three types of lighteners are oil, cream and powder

Scenario: I am a on the scalp lightener that can be mixed with activators, what am I?

A:You are a cream lightener 

Scenario: Normally, I would never touch the scalp, but during double-process blonding. I do. What am I ?

A: You are off-the-scalp/powdered lightener.

Q: What type of lightener can be used for high-lifting services?

A:  A cream lightener can be used fo high lifting services.

Q:If I need to do a quick service, what type of lightener should I use ?

A: For a quick service I should use off-the scalp lightener.

Q: Would I be able to put this lightener on the scalp ?

A: I would not be able to put this lightener on the scalp regularly, only in a situation where it is designed for on-scalp applications.

Q:How would I know whether or not I should put the lightener on the scalp? 

A:You would know whether the lightener should touch the scalp based on manufacturer’s instructions.

Q: What is an oil lightener ?

A:An oil lightener is the mildest type of lightener, used to lift 1-2 levels.

Q:What form does off-the -scalp lighteners come in ?

A: Off-the-scalp lighteners are powder.

Start a discussion about off the scalp lighteners getting on the scalp? : If the off-the-scalp lighteners are “quick-lighteners”,

 What can happen if the lightener gets on the scalp?

 What may be the reaction ?

Ask if anyone has ever used this type of lightener.

Talk about body heat and the lightener itself heating up. 

SUMMARY: Hair lightening (decolorizing) diffuses the natural or artificial color from hair. The different types of hair lighteners are oil, cream, and powder. Oil lighteners “on the scalp” Mildest and most appropriate for one or two levels of lift .Cream lighteners “on the scalp” strong enough to do bonding, gentle enough to use on the scalp. Powder lighteners ‘off the scalp lighteners” powder form, strong enough for blonding, dries quickly, expands and spreads.

There are 3 forms of hair lighteners, which are : Oil , Cream and Powder.

Oil and cream lighteners can be use directly on-the-scalp.

Cream lighteners are used to lift One – Two levels. This type of lightener can also be used to lighten dark facial  and body hairs.

Cream lighteners do not drip/run. The strength of powdered lighteners allow high-lifting blonding.

Activator are used in powdered off-the-scalp lighteners. Powdered lighteners 

DO NOT touch the scalp when applying. The powdered lighteners suitable to touch the scalp, are usually for double-process blonding.
