Volunteering and putting time in to give back has made my stay at CityTech much more fulfilling. I enjoyed being an active member of SADHA and taking part in various activities such as the toothbrush sale, senior graduation party of 2015, and four consecutive semesters of teaching yoga for hygienists. During public health class we were able to explore giving back on a larger scale where we took part in an oral health education and fluoride varnish program. During the oral health education program children watched an educational video on a trip to the dentist, and they practiced tooth brushing on a stuffed animal. For my service learning project, my group and I took part in teaching oral health care to autistic children with fun videos and activities. The name of the program was Eden 2 located in Staten Island, NY, where they even had a dental setting to get children accustomed to the dentist. I have never worked with children who have developmental disabilities, but this was definitely a rewarding and educational experience.
