Ethics in Graphic Design: Part 2

(2A) I feel that as a designer we will always evolve as designers in general. The knowledge from the readings were refreshing to read and had some valid points such as AIGA’s reading the Use of Illustration. The very paragraph points out something I must always do as a challenge with is creating drawings that transcend the writing of words. As an illustrator I can relate to that due to the fact that just because I am not going to be there to explain every detail of my drawing and stories, the execution of the illustration should always explain everything I am trying to say without speaking. But whether photography, illustration, or videography I always credit all information to the source by adding a footnote below the image or link in my process books. As a hand lettering artist I have to not only be sure to source the font types I illustrate for example font type circus but must be careful I am not copying an art style that will lead to someone taking action. Hand lettering is fun but like all forms of design you may credit the style and make sure you are doing nothing affecting others. As always being ethical is important to the work.

(2B) In the Fairey Copyright case I felt the decision of legal action was necessary because of all the complications Shepard Fairey created. For one he plead guilty in admitting that he destroyed documented and then created his own documents to hide the proof of him having used a certain “Associated Press photograph of Mr. Obama as the source of his well-known “Hope” campaign poster.” These things are in direct violation of what we are as designers, which is to uphold a quality of ethics and etiquette. His actions to cover it up only proves why it was necessary to take legal actions. You only prolonged everything by lying only to still prove you were guilty. He affected multiple people in the matter and prevented the right individuals from being compensated. Though everything was legally handle this very unprofessional to do in the world.

Ethics in Graphic Design: Part 1

(1A) Ethics is not only part of our profession as designers but the guidelines that lead to proper execution of protecting you and the things you create for your clients. Making sure all parties involved are protected is the driving purpose of ethics. Among other things it shows the level of professional that you one lives up to as they network to build a reputation in the industry. If ethics aren’t followed they can lead into a series of things not only affecting your reputation but also might offend people and cultures.

(1B) Where I am currently interning we source our images by our own photography. When the images and video require models we hand them a form to fill out. The form is an agreement they must fill out for their approval; they have no problem with pictures or recorded footage of them being used by the public educational organization. In the AIGA’s reading A Client’s Guide to Design speaks on the standard of professional practice. They address the designers’ responsibility to the client, which I had to in making sure the work I designed was in the company’s best interest without creating conflicts to any projects. All things were all known to my supervisor’s knowledge and only edited unless he wanted that done. The reading addresses a designer’s responsibility to other designers. I made sure when sourcing any photos or images the original designer or photographer were credited for their work.

First Project

One thing I was able to do as in my experience as an intern was work on a collaborative project. Using the ideas of my supervisor and a photo from another intern I worked on three videos for the company. The focus of the project was to advertise the public educational organization. The videos are supposed to advertise based on the tagline that the organization starts at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge.

My supervisor wanted me to use my knowledge of the 3D camera in adobe after effects. The first video I made we decided on not using because the people in the image did not have any motion compared to the buildings. The second video I made was to showcase all of the company’s buildings as they passed across Brooklyn Bridge. While the third video of photos are clipped together of the camera slowly zooming in and cutting into the next image starting from the middle of the Brooklyn Bridge to the first building of the organization located at the end of the bridge.

The second video was the one I made the most edits to because it was the main one my supervisor was interested in using. It did prove to be challenging due to being difficult to cleanly masking out of the cable wires of the Brooklyn Bridge.  So I came up with a unique way to mask them out by masking as much as possible in Photoshop and then transferring it into procreate. In procreate I used my apple pencil to by hand remove the background around the wires. Wasn’t sure if it would work at first but my Supervisor was fine with it. He told me to rearrange the placement of buildings, add a green screen, and remove a few things it had before. He then took the video and incorporated it into a video he made.

First Event

The first time I attended an event for this organization was called the Club Festival. This experience was helpful in recording video because I wanted this practice for video recording events. It also helped me get footage on world building when I character design because it was a lively event. This helps when trying to be part of the industry because characters are also designed on look and the behavior designs come from people interacting in different environments. I was using my phone so making sure the camera was as still as possible was my main focus. Getting different club shots and interaction was important.

Recording isn’t as simple as it seems but also requires good technique to have the perfect footage to edit and clip together. My Supervisor introduced me to a device known as a gimbal where you can attach your phone and use the camera to get very smooth and difficult angles you can get by holding it with your hand. A lot of footage I captured that day was by hand but the demos and footage I saw from another intern that day showed some really awesome angles. In all the event was very social, had a unique club to be a part of and was even educational on the things they provide.

Improving in Photography

This internship has refreshed my memory on the rules to photography. My Supervisor took me to a location once to take pictures around the public educational organization’s buildings. The task was to take pictures of students as they learn and interact in their classes. He made me carry a big flashlight that would flash every time he took a picture. I would stand in the spots he directed to be at and just see the biggest difference in picture quality from that.

This helps me in the industry because I already know how to illustrate and graphic design. Photography will only add more to my skill sets of designing. Photography is a huge part of how I get reference for poses and landscape. applying the rules I am learning from this will help me with color and shading because of the light source direction he taught me in angling. Photography is a big key in design I will use to create my stories.

Learning How to Make and Edit Videos

As an intern for this organization I was able to learn on how to think when creating a video. What to do as I capture the video and photos of how I will be using it? My Supervisor taught me as you capture footage to start planning on thinking of the different ways you will be using these things to properly create what you in vision. For example when taking pictures as well as recording footage I tried to make sure that no cars, trees, sun glare, or lamp posts were in the way so I can properly mask out the pictures in Photoshop.

I focus on Graphic Design illustration, one of the things I learnt from this experience in regards to the industry is how to edit and create videos. Photos I use for reference drawing human anatomy poses and landscape for world building. Video will teach me how to properly keyframe movement at the right time for animation.

The Culture of the Workplace

When working for a company like this I was a bit nervous at first. It turned out to be a very professional, friendly, and stress free zone work environment. My days of work were divided in between in person and remote. The Attire of the workplace is a formal and very professionally designed section with cubicles and offices. We are allowed to dress however we want professionally or ordinary clothes.

The days were always different because one day I am taking photos in different areas of Brooklyn or I’m using that same video footage and images to construct a video advertising the organization. When contacting others we replied fast on time with feedback or any help. In all, I’m glad I was able to intern here. It has many good qualities of basic etiquette.

Role at the Company

My role in this company when I started my internship was to record video footage, photos, and create videos of the public educational organizations’ buildings. My supervisor, who is the Senior Design Videographer, and I came into contact with this internship site through one of my college Professors. This interview was scheduled for an in person meeting with only one person who is my supervisor and head of the department.

I was asked questions on my knowledge of programs such as adobe and procreate? What are my strongest skill sets or programs I use most? My thought process behind the characters I have designed? After I answered all his questions including my character design thought process he gave me the opportunity to intern for his company on the spot. I had many options at this point but decided on going with this opportunity because I would get more learning experience from this internship here.

My First Internship

Copyrigth Photo by Janhmar Moquete

For my internship I interned at a public educational organization with the  primary business of this company is to advertise a college. This is a large company located in New York City, Brooklyn. The history of this company being founded goes back to 1881, with it being renamed 1953, and the department I am working for being opened in 1998. Key events in this organization were allowing women to attend the organization in 1965, the name of the organization as it is known today was changed again in 2002, the BFA in Communication Design was introduced February 1998, and in 2020 when the pandemic hit the 5 year BArch was introduced.  The clients are the faculty and staff of the college.

The area where I work in the company are in photography, recording video footage, creating and editing video. The articles I read on this organization spoke of the long history and changes this organization has gone through. This Public Educational Organization provides about 52 majors individuals can choose from, a long lasting history, 3 buildings that house their educational faculty, and a place of many things to learn. These articles taught the many diverse paths you can take for your education. Each path being more unique than the other while some are very much alike and even surprising.
