Philosophy Statement

As a current BSN student and an RN working in a local hospital, I had many opportunities to reflect on what nursing means to me and about various nursing theorists. My personal goal when working as a RN is to use my knowledge to be a compassionate nurse who cares not only for the physical well being of my patients, but also focuses on their emotional and spiritual well-being. During patient care, it is my goal to include family members and care for their well-being as well. I also strive to create a culturally competent environment taking into considerations the culture and values of my patients and their families.

Being a Registered Nurse allowed me to reflect on the kind of nurse I want to be. The theory that I most relate to is Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring. Watsons theory focuses on caring for patients as a whole, including physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. Using this approach has allowed me to help my patients during their toughest times by including their family members into their plan of care and allowing them to open up about their emotional state, which facilitated heart touching conversations. Being respectful and open about their religion, culture and values opens the door to a trusting relationship, which allows me to meet the needs of my patients and provide quality patient care. Being open to different cultures and religions shows my patients and their families unconditional acceptance, which allows them to integrate their religion or culture into their healing process. Another aspect of Watsons Theory of Human Caring is being present. I find it extremely important to be available for uninterrupted quality time with my patients and their families, which allows my patients to feel cared for and respected.
