In the second semester of the program, due to my interest for oral conditions, I encouraged a couple of my classmates to conduct a project with me focusing on xerostomia. We gathered the information that defined xerostomia, causes and risk factors that influence xerostomia, type of solutions that may alleviate the symptoms of dry mouth, and the role of a dental team when interacting with patients with this type of an oral condition. BROCHURE!
Throughout my experience in this program, I had a wonderful opportunity to volunteer for a Hispanic community. I attended an educational project which took place in Church “Iglesia Pentecostal El Camino”, located in Brooklyn.
The goal of our team presentation was to improve the oral health knowledge of the community with a low income. Our team gathered the information and observed the community needs after what the presentation was implemented. We applied our knowledge to demonstrate to the community how to maintain basic oral heath in an affordable way in order to prevent oral diseases. The listeners were engaged in the processes of the project. A lot of the participants have been seen in our clinic after the presentation. The presentation included: Power points, videos, quiz questions, demonstration of oral hygiene instructions, goodie bags.
This experience was invaluable to me since I had an opportunity to use my knowledge to inspire people to change their views about oral health.
