The American Nurses Association (ANA) defines nursing as “the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations.” (“What is Nursing?” n.d.) My nursing philosophy pays respect to the ANA’s definition as my philosophy is one that is centered on the following values, respect of the patient as a human being, providing safe, skilled and compassionate care to both the patient and his/her family, advocacy of patient rights and enforcement of policies to protect those rights and being aware of my culture while being understanding of a cultural beliefs. Patients are people that are in a acute or chronic state of illness. Their behaviors are driven by a variety of factors including, personal beliefs, traditions, culture, emotions and at the foundation is the fact that their state of health or well-being is not at a stable point. This is why, as a professional nurse I am committed to channeling my culturally aware and caring attitude coupled with technical skill to provide care while keeping their state in mind.
