The Pearl

The Pearl is a term used for the Media Study Center of the Communication Design Department at City Tech. It’s the culmination of a 2.5M capital project secured by President Hotzler and developed by a team of CUNY and DASNY architects and project managers with the input of the COMD department faculty: Professors Anita Giraldo and Tanya Goetz.

Under the guidance of chair Prof. MaryAnn Biehl and the entire department, the basement of the Allied Medial Arts Building, known as The Pearl Building was transformed into fully functioning professional learning environment representative of the communication design industry. It houses 6 classrooms with adjustable seating capacity, a full drawing studio, a motion graphics lab, a conference room and open lab space. Other plans are in progress to transform other labs into new media study facilities.

This OpenLab project entry  documents the project with plans, images and notes during the five-year timeline of its development.
