4. A nurse is told to give a patient recovering from surgery a total of 15 units of a potent antibiotic over 3 days. The dosage should be cut in half the second day and then reduced by one additional unit for the 3rd day. How many units should she administer on the first day? To get credit you must define a variable and create a linear equation.
Let x= units of the potent antibitic on the first day.
(1/2)x units is for the second day.
x-1 units is for the third day.
x+(1/2)x +(x-1)=15
x=6.4 (units)
The nurseshould administer 6.4 units of the potent antibiotic on the first day.
Correction of the former solution to this question as follows:
Let d = the dosage of the potent antibitic on the first day.
the dosage of 2nd day =1/2 d
the dosage of 3rd day =1/2 d-1
d +1/2 d +( 1/2 d -1)=15
2d=16
d=8
The nurseshould administer 8 units of the potent antibiotic on the first day.
