Course Description

In this course students will learn the foundations and basic applications of quantum mechanics. We will discuss the origins of quantum theory, Planck’s law for black-body radiation, the photoelectric effect, and wave-particle duality. Students will learn the Heisenberg uncertainty principle and the probability interpretation of the quantum mechanical wave function. We will study the Schrodinger equation and apply it to simple systems such as the harmonic oscillator and the hydrogen atom. We will discuss the application of quantum mechanics to nuclear magnetic resonance and quantum computing. Students will learn the basic mathematics of linear operators, matrices, and vector spaces.
