Course Description

This course will enable students to write critical essays that demonstrate substantial argument and analysis. Revision for style and organization will be stressed, as well as the ability to incorporate research into student essays. Students will practice the following skills:
• Distinguish an over-arching theme and controlling idea
• Isolate, discuss, and write about difficult, interesting, enlightening, or controversial passages and how they relate to the whole
• Explore the implications of a text
• Structure an analytical and/or argumentative essay with a controlling idea, effective organization, supportive evidence and consideration of opposing viewpoints and evidence
• Locate and evaluate sources and integrate primary and secondary sources with their own ideas
