Prof. MasielloParticipantBack on Feb. 6 you were asked to think about prefixes and to write five compound sentences using a
comma + a FANBOYS word (conjunction) between two thoughts.
ex. Today the teacher has a problem with his computer, so we will have class asynchronously instead.
Your sentences would have used “for, “and,” “but, “or, “yet,” and “so.”
I mentioned that using “nor” would not be helpful then. Please find your sentences. Many students correctly posted them here on OpenLab and you should always save your work.
Please make sure you have five sentences as described above.
Note: any sentence with “or” will not work for today’s work. Therefore, you may have to write additional compound sentences to do today’s work.
Copy and paste your five sentences.
Now change them by omitting the comma + conjunction and replacing those two items with only a semicolon.
Ex. Today the teacher has a problem with his computer; we will have class asynchronously instead.
_______________________________________________________________________
This is an alternate way of writing a compound sentence. It is correct but may sound like something is missing.
_______________________________________________________________________
Please note: If you have these same thoughts with only a comma, you have a structural error called a comma splice. It is a common mistake that should be avoided.
ex. Today the teacher has a problem with his computer, we will have class asynchronously instead. <– this is WRONG! A comma without a conjunction is too weak to support two thoughts.
Now, post and also save your five sentences which now have semicolons here on OpenLab.
