Jeffrey Gibson does a beautiful job of showcasing his family heritage while also demonstrating to the world how his family struggled living in colonized America. Being born into the Cherokee and Choctaw tribes, Gibson comes from a Native American background. In Deep Blue Day, Gibson repurposes an Everlast punching bag and gives it his own twist.

While preserving most of the contents on top the same, Gibson uses traditional beads and leather fringes on the bottom to represent his family identity while contrasting the top, which still serves as a punching bag.

Even though on literal terms both concepts are very different, Gibson makes it possible for these two ideas to share a common theme: being used and being beat up by anyone.

Hanging dead in the center of the room, Deep Blue Day perfectly encapsulates Gibson’s message and captures the attention of the public.
