Research Project

In the second semester of the program, I presented with two other dental hygiene students at  2016 Wellness Fair of NYC College of Technology. We made an informational brochure and research paper about Breath Analysis for the Detection of Lung Cancer. Through the research, we found out that Ion mobility spectrometry (IMS), a breath analysis device, can detect specific volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in patients with lung cancer. IMS can detect a very low concentration of VOCs in a short time and is superior to gas chromatography (GC) and mass spectrometry (MS) as it can be applied at the bed-site                                                      Brochure

and direct sampling can be taken without preparation. An ideal approach for population screening could be the breath analysis, due to its non-invasiveness, simplicity and inexpensive cost, unlike computed tomography (CT) and bronchoscopy.
