Welcome! My name is Evelyn Say-Ramos, and I am a dental hygiene student at New York City College of Technology, Class of 2023. I come from a Hispanic family where education is considered a luxury. My parents and most of my older family members never had a proper education growing up. This is due to poverty in their home country, Guatemala. Thankfully, my parents have supported and given me an education for which I am very grateful.
I always knew that I wanted a career in the healthcare field, but I did not know what exactly. During high school, I was a part of the Medical Program in which I learned the basics of healthcare and careers. Through this program, I maintained an internship at Maimonides Medical Center in different departments. I stumbled upon Dental Hygiene when a nurse in the hospital told me that her daughter was in that field.
After researching what the profession entailed, I became very interested in becoming a dental hygienist. Months later, I applied and got accepted into the dental hygiene program at NYCCT. This program is very competitive and it was a huge accomplishment getting in on the first try. 2 years later, here I am about to graduate! It has been a pleasure treating all of my patients in the clinic and I look forward to meeting many new patients after graduation. Dental hygiene school has been a stressful, but great experience.
