353 Word Comparison Essay:

Initially, for this PSA, I wanted to speak on AI therapy and how people use it as a supportive tool for mental health. With the growing use of AI in our daily lives, many have turned to AI as a platform for therapeutic guidance and emotional support. Instead, I spoke on AI being used in digital marketing, highlighting how businesses can incorporate AI tools to enhance their content. The PSA was to push the recognition of digital marketing even though it has been around for a while now. Although my PSA is aimed at a broad audience, I specifically wanted to target 9-5 workers who may feel like quitting and are seeking opportunities to work from the comfort of their home while earning good income.

Chat Version 1 successfully reached a broader audience while effectively targeting 9-to-5 workers in a clear way. The messaging highlighted the key subjects being announced, using straightforward language that was easy to understand. My PSA went from “Are you someone that has been interested in starting a digital marketing business? to “Are you ready to leave your 9-5 job behind and start a digital marketing business?” This shift allowed the PSA to still target a broad audience while zooming in on 9-5 workers who may be looking for better opportunities. Afterward, my PSA went into highlighting the benefits of AI. While I thought that was a good start, I realized I needed to list specific reasons why traditional 9-to-5 workers might consider leaving their jobs that going into digital marketing will solve.

I believe that the third Chat version came out better than the second. I like the reasons that were listed such as “more flexibility, control over your income, and the opportunity to build something of your own” that were spot on for the PSA. The starting question was shortened and got straight to the point. I really like the last sentence “Take control of your career and get those digits growing in your account!” due to it emphasizing the idea of entrepreneurship in digital marketing and taking immediate action ‌ to watch your money increase overtime.

Reflection Essay:

At first, I had mixed feelings about my PSA project in the beginning. I was struggling to brainstorm ideas for what I would make my project related to AI. Afterwards, when I came up with the topic to speak on, the process wasn’t hard. I did well by referring back to the PSA rubric and took my time implementing what needed to be done for my PSA. In this reflection essay, I will explain my PSA process, more so touching on what I learned, what was the easiest and hardest parts of the project, what I would do if I had another week, and my views possibly changing about generative AI.

Working on this AI PSA project taught me two key lessons. First, I realized the importance of narrowing down and deepening the focus of my target audience. Initially, I aimed for a broader audience that simply included individuals interested in digital marketing. However, as the PSA process continued, I realized I should re-focus on a more specific group which were 9-5 workers, who would truly benefit from the message. Second, I learned that you have to make your PSA sound engaging so that people actually pay attention! If it’s boring, no one will want to watch or listen to it, and the whole message gets lost. I used a strong call-to-action with an exciting phrase that said, “Take control of your career and get those digits growing in your account!” That enthusiastic tone, and vivid imagery, are essential to resonate with the audience.

Additionally, there were both easy and hard things that came up during the project. As mentioned before, the hard part was definitely brainstorming and trying to come up with a catchy title for the PSA. I spent a lot of time thinking about it, and it was kind of frustrating because I wanted it to be at least okay to me. The easy part was that once the main subject was identified, generating ideas that supported it came more naturally. It felt like once I figured that out, everything started to flow. I also found it simple to look for articles that supported what my PSA is about.

If I had another week to complete this project, I would probably take the opportunity to insert more prompts into ChatGPT. This would allow me to explore more ideas and which could enhance my PSA. I honestly can’t think of anything else that I would do with more time.

My views on AI haven’t completely changed while working on the PSA. I’ve always believed that AI can really change industries and make our lives better. I’m curious to see how it can help us be more productive, make things easier, and create new ideas. However, I still worry about things like privacy, people losing jobs, and the chance of bias algorithms.

Aha Moment: After reviewing ChatGPT’s response, I realized that one thing I could have done was include a specific reference to a business or businesses that have successfully integrated AI into their digital marketing strategies.

Essay: My Photo Essay

ENG 1121 (Prof. Scanlan)

9/23/24

Light Beyond the Ocean (2022)            Waterfront Evening Glow (2022)                    Burying my Heart (2022)

These photos are arranged to convey my visual narrative, but it’s important to note that chronologically, the passing of my grandfather occurred first. Both “Light Beyond the Ocean”, “Waterfront Evening Glow” are art photos taken in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. At the time of capturing these two images, I was in a state of depression, feeling the weight of my emotions caused by grief and other factors. I decided to book a flight to visit my loved ones, hoping that a change of scenery would help clear my mind a little and lift my spirits. While on my trip I had the urge to capture those very specific moments of the beautiful scenery of the buildings’ lights, the sky, and the yachts on the water that caught my attention.

While “Light Beyond the Ocean”, “Waterfront Evening Glow” utilize light to create a sense of beauty and peace in life “Burying My Heart” uses a grey filter to convey the feeling of hurt and gloom at the end of life. In “Light Beyond the Ocean” the golden rays break through the thick clouds creating that warmth and balance of beauty of the horizon in which the calm blue water flows towards. The shades of blue are soft and the waves gently rippling shows that peace. Furthermore, in “Waterfront Evening Glow” the soft blue sky creates that soothing peaceful backdrop bringing forth the gentle glow of the streetlights and building lights carried out into the distance. The resting boats reflecting off the still water and the green scenery of the trees indicate the pleasant mixture of nature and human activity. In contrast, the grey effect in “Burying My Heart” was intentional through the app VSCO with the preset effect A5. The grey in the sky reflects the emotions I was struggling with at the time—feelings of heaviness that weighed deeply within me and mirrored the emptiness and sadness that seemed to surround the atmosphere. The dominant expression of this photograph is the white casket in the carriage which stands out against the grey. The casket alone symbolizes the ending of life creating that intense sense of loss and grief.

As explained by Susan Sontag (2013), “Photographs are as much an interpretation of the world as paintings and drawings are.” Like paintings and drawings, photographs not only show things exactly as they are but show a way of seeing the world, just like when an artist paints or draws. The photographer makes the choices of what to include, how to take the picture, and what the photographs should feel like. The three photos, “Light Beyond the Ocean”, “Waterfront Evening Glow” and “Burying my Heart” all imprints in my mind the idea of inevitable change of life within the world.

Berger (2013) states that “Human visual perception is a far more complex and selective process than that by which a film records.” Most may look at the photos and focus on the surface elements each photograph produced —like the water, boats, and buildings—When I saw these images, I knew it was possible to relate them and tell a deeper story by going based on narrative created through the composition. Considering the sunrise accompanied by the ship; this indicated new journeys within a new day. The soft glow of the evening sky, transitioning from day to night represents the inevitable passage of time. Lastly, the white casket as a reminder of the finality of life’s journey; These images collectively portray the nature of existence, illustrating how moments in a glowing city can lead to an intense goodbye. The interaction of light, color, and subjects in these photos will encourage our perceptions.

In comparison, all three photos have a high reality effect. In “Light Beyond the Ocean”, you can see the sun peeking out through the gloomy clouds with golden sun rays meeting the ocean. The little ocean waves approaching shore, and the boat in further distance sailing by greeting the sun. In the art photo, “Waterfront Evening Glow” the bluish yellow evening sky can be seen above the tall lit-up buildings, the park trail, and the yachts on the dark water. Additionally, in “Burying my Heart” due to the carried casket being shown and my figure amongst the elements with the wind blowing my hair; that contributes to the high reality effect of each photo.

Most of the time we capture moments in our everyday life because we get caught up and drawn to the visual sighting of what we see or because we’re disconnected from reality for a quick second fully present, eager to document our experiences as they unfold. The moments we freeze in time are just pieces of a larger narrative, filled with emotions. In reference to Berger, he states that “Every photograph presents us with two messages: a message concerning the event photographed and another concerning a shock of discontinuity.” (63). The literal contents of these photographs above involve their unique scenery, whether the beautiful landscapes, or the quiet moments of reflection. On the outside scope after each photo is taken, they are reminders that life continues on beyond the frame and will eventually come to an end. Time doesn’t stand still; it moves forward. I see the photos as more than just a visual record. I look at them to reflect on the beauty but temporariness of life.

“The evening glow over the waterfront”

This is an art photo taken in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. I was in a state of depression and booked a flight to visit my loved ones and clear my mind. When I had stepped foot onto the balcony, I just had the urge to capture this very moment of the beautiful scenery of the buildings’ lights, the sky, and the yachts on the water that caught my attention. The view created a calm atmosphere for me and made me realize that even during my depression, there is beauty to life and light to the darkness that is felt inside. Seeing the yachts instantly took me back to when I was 16, and my dad and grandparents took me on my very first yacht ride through Miami. Mentally, I felt low, but physically, I was above the ground, midway in the air, feeling connected to the world below. The quietness of the area encouraged a peace of mind for me.

“ Light Beyond The Ocean”

This photo is an art photo of a sunrise happening in Florida. My cousin and I planned to wake up early in the morning to catch the sunrise. It was drizzling lightly, but when I noticed the sun breaking through the gloomy clouds, with its rays piercing through, I knew I had to capture that as my decisive moment. This photo has a high reality effect because of the realistic nature event of the sky and ocean happening. There is also a boat that can be seen  in the distance but sun caught my attention more.

  • Burying my Heart”

This photo is a documentary and portrait photo that was taken of me taking a picture of my beloved grandfather’s casket during his burial in August 2022. The app VSCO was used to edit the photo and the preset effect a5 was used. The grayish effect applied to the photo was intentional, meant to reflect my emotions at the time. It showed the heaviness I felt inside and mirrored the emptiness and sadness that seemed to go on throughout the day. The dominant expression of this photograph is the casket in the carriage. You can see me taking a photo on my phone, and in my mind I was capturing what would be the last sighting of my father figure who I loved dearly.

Teju Coles HW

In Teju Coles’ essay “Perfect and Unrehearsed,” one of my favorite photos in his essay was “Three boys in Liberia.” This is a photograph taken by Martin Munkacsi in Liberia. The photo is sourced from Howard Greenberg Gallery. When I first looked at the photo I saw that it was in black and white. I realized the three boys and the little wave they were running towards. You can see footprints in the sand and little water splashes made by their feet as well. This photo makes me feel a sense of joy by seeing the body language of the boys which indicates that they were full of joy as well having fun running into the water. The photo makes me want to go to the beach and connect with nature. This leads into the idea of the decisive moment being created. The three boys were spotted happily running into the water. The photographer quickly snapped the picture and just by looking at the  feet placement of each body you can tell that it was a decisive moment. The dominant impression of this photo is the boys living life, making their way to the water in a running motion, hands out, ready to get splashed by the water that connected to shore.Â
