Albert Coello ENG-2575 D594 Chapter 5 Summary

Chapter 5 talks about the Alan Turner who served during world war two decoding Nazi messages, he killed himself eating a cyanide-laced apple and now is remembered for creating the blueprint for the modern computer. Turner didn’t realize that his machine would become an universal medium and the internet is the end result of his work. The web succeeds as the best source of modern media. The web has gone through several enhancements from the addition of sounds to the implementation of videos, online gaming and commerce opportunities from companies like Netflix. However as a place of learning it also offers a plethora of sources from encyclopedias to blog, articles and news outlets. As a new medium it seems to replace old ones which are less effective. The web allows companies to change their products and presentation to something that fits that environment, sites now follow different standards which copy those from the biggest and more popular ….

In the article ” A medium Of The Most General Nature” by Nicholas Carr, the author tells us how internet has great impact on spreading medium. At first, the author talked about how digital computer was first used, and later, how it was developed that many institution can use it . Then, the invention of internet made people start to use digital computer in daily life to send emails, get information and so on. Later on, people can see pictures and videos, listen to music and play games. Nowadays, people also use phones. And phone is like a mini version of computer. So, gradually, television was  taken place by computer or phones. Since people use internet very often, many medium producer came out many new products, such as “youtube”, ” facebook” and some other web browser . So people can search easily, listen to music easily. At the same time, more and more people post articles, books into the internet. Therefore, people can receive information more easily through news,  websites, magazines and so on. Public libraries starts to have public computers, which make more people have opportunities to read.

JeanBeaubrun, English 2575, Section D594, Summary of chapter 5

In this passage, the author points out the internet affects people mind, as he elaborates many different ways it happens. The writers support his point by scientific invention. The author keep supporting his point by mentioning the evolution of the technology such as the internet and the vast majority of applications that get involved in. Additionally, he mentions that any new technology is always a continuity. The writer continues to back up his point by pointing out how media…

Mei Ling Chen, ENG2575-D594 Summary

The chapter “A Medium Of The Most General Nature” by Nicholas Carr is talking about Turing’s finds have help to develop the computer which has become an necessary part of our daily lives and  be able to do  for many things. The Net has also become very important and has replace a lot of mass (old technology) media too. According to Turing, he thought that it would be much more efficient to create one machine which can do various tasks rather than multiple machines doing each task separately just like the computer we has in now-day.There is an argument that when Net has replace many mass media, but not replace all because in the article it states that there are some traditional forms of media not been replace like CD, DVD, radio, books and newspaper etc… that people still using it. This shows it is an argument because there still has some old technologies media around our daily life not just the new technologies media which upcoming or already has, that there still people using the old the ones. Also Net can replace many old media just like what he says “it’s bidirectional” which means to functioning in two directions.

Constance Diaz ENG2575 D594 Summary

In chapter five of The Shallows the writer discusses how the net has become our universal medium  and as it rapidly grows and technology advances, so does it change how modern society functions.  People are spending more and more time on the net as the average time logged onto the net has grown exponentially, doubling in time from 2005 to 2009.  A social scientist working for Microsoft explained it as how we “never really have to disconnect”.  A study in 2009 by Ball State University’s center for media design  concluded that American regardless of age spend at least eight and a half hours looking at screens. The net has changed how information is given and received, it has been digitized. Digitized information has become fragmented and in doing so disrupts our attention. The high volume of information online that is available to us has changed the way we distribute our attention and how we absorb this information. This has changed the profitability of business forcing them to change how certain media is distributed. As the net grows as the universal medium other forms will die off. Companies now have to adapt to the people who they are trying to attract.

Miki Yau, ENG 2575, Section D594, Summary 150 words

In “The Shallows” by Nicholas Carr, Chapter four, “A Medium Of The Most General Nature”. The author states that since technology is more advanced in the society, more and more people are spending the times to use the technologies in daily life. The author writes that the first mass computer produced in 1954 by British mathematician Alan Turing. Turing Was the first one who explored that picture and word can be encrypted into numbers and can be transmitted through the computers. Then the author uses the survey to show that more and more people spend times on the media, such as phones, computers and TVs. By 2009, the average number of adults in North America were spending online a week is double in 2005. The people are using the text messaging and call worldwide. Next, the author uses the quote by McLuhan in Understanding. ““A NEW MEDIUM is never an addition to an old one”. Which is that the new technology can not replace the old technology because the new one was created base on the old one. As technology became a general thing in the world, people need them as daily basis. Last, the author shows that the technology actually changed the economics of production and distribution. For example, the entertainment business.

Dwight Hargett 2575 D594 “The Shallows” Chapter 5 summary

In chapter 5 of “The Shallows” by Nicolas Carr, the subject of technology and its role in society as it grew and evolved comes into question. The chapter starts off by introducing Alan Turing and his role in making the blueprint for the modern computer. Turing, during his time, demonstrated the idea that a perfect system was highly unlikely and that there are general limits to the capacity that computers can operate from.  In essence, the role of technology would be best used as a general interface. The chapter goes on show how technology changed the way people interfaced with and produced media. It also shows how technology became this new medium from which this information could be passed between people but also how began to change psychologically as a result of it. The transition from print to tech changed the dynamic that people would experience of reading as text became more short paced.

Elinson Nunez ENG 2575-D594 Summary of Chapter 5 The Shallows

This chapter is exploring the first know computer that was created by Alan Turing. The idea was to create a computer that can be programmed to do any task that you would like it to perform. Nicholas Carr main point in this chapter was to show how the internet is affecting the way people read text on a computer screen vs. a newspaper.  One of the limiting factors of computers in the past was speed. What made computers as fast as we know them now was the web.The price drop of memory and bandwidth made it possible to add photos and videos to the web because in the early days of the web, the first websites were only text. People are spending more and more time on the web then every before, according to a study done in 2009 that showed that Americans were spending an average of 12 hours a week online which is doubled compared to 2005. People are not reading newspapers on printed text and spending more time online reading the news which is making newspapers obsolete. Research shows that  reading is not only visual but also tactile. So holding a piece of paper is more tactile then reading for a computer screen.

Lichi Zhu-ENG2575 D594 Summary of “A Medium Of The Most General Nature”

The foundational concept for this chapter is about the machine that could serve any purpose and would have unlimited potential. Base on the development of “the machine” , this machine which is  as a computer in now day, becomes a type of medium , and provides the net and the internet for people  exchanges their information between consumed and created users . The development of this process offer a lot of probability not only the good things, but also including the bad things into human being’s movement. Like the increasing speed of technology doesn’t equal more free time for people to spend on things other than technology, it just means more free time to spend on the internet. In addition, one of  the most interesting consequences of the internet becoming people’s primary means of consuming information is that older mediums are also changing to reflect the internet experience. The way people move through the world is increasingly resembling the way we navigate a series of website. The significant of these machines or technologies not only shows its own function , it is highly modify people’s daily lives and the ability of logic and data analysis.

From chapter 5 the Nicholas Carr mentioned  about when computer came out, human’s living style got changed. Especially when internet was found, people started to read a lot of words on web page instead of reading on the print papers. Rocky Mountain news had closed the company because of reading digital technology. Some company changed the way like before, they focused on digital products. Carr also pointed out that old technology such as music tape, radio, CD, and DVD still living on but it became out of date, because those the new software technology like YouTube and Netflix, that for people can just watch the video online or buy the music from digital store such as iTunes. However, Carr showed that old traditional form media still exist. People still buy the book and subscribe to magazines.  This chapter was focusing on show the details about how the internet affected today’s society, and how the human’s living environment changed by accepting the new technology. But some old thing still in use.
