Elinson Nunez ENG 2575-D594 Summary of Chapter 5 The Shallows

This chapter is exploring the first know computer that was created by Alan Turing. The idea was to create a computer that can be programmed to do any task that you would like it to perform. Nicholas Carr main point in this chapter was to show how the internet is affecting the way people read text on a computer screen vs. a newspaper.  One of the limiting factors of computers in the past was speed. What made computers as fast as we know them now was the web.The price drop of memory and bandwidth made it possible to add photos and videos to the web because in the early days of the web, the first websites were only text. People are spending more and more time on the web then every before, according to a study done in 2009 that showed that Americans were spending an average of 12 hours a week online which is doubled compared to 2005. People are not reading newspapers on printed text and spending more time online reading the news which is making newspapers obsolete. Research shows that  reading is not only visual but also tactile. So holding a piece of paper is more tactile then reading for a computer screen.
