Just as you did last week, bring stories you are working on to today’s class. We are going to do a final free write for a new story, but we are primarily going to focus on generative exercises for developing them into the assignment. For this, bring a couple of flash fictions or a longer story you’ve been working on.
Last Thursday (March 31), we looked at the Fiction Assignment (linked here). This Thursday, (April 7), you will have your first in-class fiction workshop. Today’s exercises will focus on making stories you’ve started even longer.
Writers,
I will see you soon in class, but I wanted to remind you that today is City Tech’s 41st Annual Literary Arts Festival. The event is free and celebrates both the featured poet and student writers.
I am back, in good health, look forward to writing with you tomorrow in our classroom: 2:30 pm in Namm 521. To keep us on track with assignments for the semester, I’ve made a couple of changes to this week’s activities.
For class tomorrow, March 8, please bring two verses or stanzas from a favorite song. We will use them for an in-class poetry writing exercise.
In class tomorrow, after the poetry writing exercise, we will review the Poetry Assignment together. You are preparing two of the poems you’ve written in this class for submission, using submission guidelines that will be available on the OpenLab. We will go over the assignment in class tomorrow.
The Poetry Quiz will now be completed as homework on Blackboard after tomorrow’s class. I will go over the procedure in tomorrow’s class. You will have 24 hours to login and complete the quiz, which will have a 40 minute time limit.
Remember to write your abecedarian on our Discussion Board by the end of the day today. Many of you have done this but a few need to participate. This discussion board is how I’m taking attendance for our asynchronous session for March 3 (last Thursday). The discussion board is here for you to participate or read: Discussion Board : Abecedarian Poems.
Another reminder: I have office hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-5 pm on ZOOM. See the blackboard folder for the address.
Great work on the Discussion Board! Some of you are doing interesting things with line breaks, in particular Scanio and Janet Lu! See them on the board (and you can still post if you haven’t). The link is HERE. Remember to log in if you are trying to post.
I’ll see you soon in class at 2:30 pm! I’ll mention this also in class, but here is information about submitting work to the LAF contest and attending the event on ZOOM with poet Layli Long Soldier.
Welcome! In this class, we will explore the process of writing and developing a creative habit. We will do a lot of writing and reading with a focus on craft and technique. Readings will include the work of professional writers and the work of your peers. We will also consider how writing influences our lives and how we can make our own writing better.
Throughout this class, you will produce poetry, fiction, and a memoir/creative-non-fiction projects as well as participate in class activities and writing workshops.
